ARSENAL VS EVERTON ASIA TROPHY FINAL WHISTLE

EVERTON'S hopes of adding silverware to their pre-season campaign were ruined by Arsenal tonight.

Goals in either half gave the Gunners a 3-1 win at the National Stadium in Singapore to inflict a first defeat of the summer on Roberto Martinez's men.

Theo Walcott put Arsenal ahead mid-way through the first-half before Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil added goals after the break to thrill the huge number of Arsenal fans in the ground.

Ross Barkley fired home a consolation goal with 15 minutes remaining.

Everton had enjoyed plenty of possession in the first-half but could not find any cutting edge and Walcott made them pay when he raced onto a ball over the top and capitalised on hesitant goalkeeping from Joel Robles.

The Blues thought they had forced an equaliser just before half-time but Gareth Barry's goal was ruled out after the referee's assistant spotted an infringement following Steven Naismith's header that was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Petr Cech.

Luke Garbutt forced Arsenal's new stopper into an even better save just after the re-start but quick-fire goals from Cazorla and Ozil soon ended hopes of a fightback.

Romelu Lukaku and Barkley were brought on just after the hour mark, with Roberto Martinez making six changes during the second 45.

And Barkley would smash home a consolation strike 15 minutes from time after excellent pressing from the Blues saw them win the ball back in Arsenal territory.

John Stones, the subject of a £20m bid from Chelsea yesterday, played 84 minutes of tonight's game before being replaced by Tyias Browning.

ARSENAL VS CHELSEA HIGHLIGHTS

SUMMARY
Arsenal and Chelsea are locked at 0-0 after a frenetic first half at Emirates Stadium saw four penalty appeals turned down.
Oscar went closest to breaking the deadlock, beating David Ospina to Cesc Fabregas' pass only for Hector Bellerin to head clear from inside his six-yard box.

Alexis and Mesut Ozil have gone close for Arsenal.
SETTING THE SCENE
That this game was even mooted as a staging post in the title race says everything about Arsenal's form since the turn of the year and, specifically, their run of eight straight league wins.
No team can match the Gunners for points in 2015 but their slow start to the campaign - and Chelsea's recent doggedness despite a drop in form - meant there were still 10 between the sides when they walked out at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
At the front of the Arsenal line was Per Mertesacker, rated 50:50 as recently as Thursday but passed fit after the medical team went to work on his ankle.
There were still four changes. Wenger opted for his most adventurous right back - Bellerin - and his most reserved left back - Nacho Monreal - while David Ospina and Olivier Giroud came in for Wojciech Szczesny and Danny Welbeck.
The title race may be a foregone conclusion but this was a chance for Wenger to register his first victory over Jose Mourinho and for Arsenal to lay down one of those mythical 'markers' ahead of next season.
The home fans are never short of pantomime villains when Chelsea come to town and on this occasion few were looking beyond former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, back in north London in a blue shirt after 303 appearances in red.
But club rivalries were put to one side before kick-off as the Emirates crowd stood to remember the 56 fans who perished in the Bradford fire, 30 years ago.

Arsenal in talks over defender Gabriel Paulista - ARSENAL SIGNING

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says the club are in talks with Villarreal in a bid to sign defender Gabriel Paulista.

"The talks are progressing quite well," he said. "Can we find an agreement or not I don't know. We are slowly progressing and there is a chance."
The Gunners are likely to have to secure a work permit for the uncapped 24-year-old Brazilian.

Krystian Bielik

Arsenal signed 17-year-old defender Krystian Bielik from Legia Warsaw for a reported £2.4m this week.
 Wenger said Bielik, who can play in central defence, would be used as a defensive midfielder "without any question".
Regarding Bielik's fitness, he said: "He's not fit because they had the long winter break in Poland so he's at the start of getting back to full fitness and will not be ready for three weeks."
Wenger said there was a "50-50" chance that Paulista, the £15m-rated defender who joined Villarreal from Brazilian side Vitoria in 2013, would join him and added: "We are ready to pay the price we think right for a good player."
But because Paulista is not a European Union citizen and has yet to establish himself as a senior Brazil international, he would not meet the automatic work permit criteria.
Arsenal would have to convince a Football Association hearing that the defender was an "exceptional talent" and so should be granted permission to work in the United Kingdom.
That recommendation would then be passed on to the government department for a final ruling.
Wenger said that Hector Bellerin should be available for Saturday's FA Cup tie at Brighton following ankle trouble, but midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (groin) is a doubt.
The Arsenal manager also said that England striker Danny Welbeck "will need two more games to be back again" and is not in full training yet.
